As I mentioned last week, I spent a summer in Nepal with some friends. I really enjoyed the markets in Katmandu - they were so different from what I had been used to in Bangalore (and even other parts of India). I snapped the photo above and fell in love with it - this woman's shop has so much merchandise - and she is patiently awaiting a sale.
Some of my favorite shopping finds in Nepal: paper lanterns (like you see in the photo above). These are everywhere and they're a great gift to take back home - because they fold up flat and are super lightweight! I also got a Nike backpack for my future husband and he still uses it to this day - now that is quality! I found some unique jewelry and other hand crafted items. It is so much fun to dig through these small shops and find a treasure! Many of the shops and markets in Katmandu cater towards western tourists - and you'll see western tourists everywhere. I recommend if you want to see the real Nepal - get out of Katmandu!
Nepal is definitely on our list of places to go - altho we're planning on backpacking it, which I suspect will cut down on souvenir shopping.
