We are gearing up for our end-of-summer trip to visit my family and some of my husband's extended family in a couple of weeks. This will be the last major trip we can go on before the baby comes. We're looking forward to having a great time with family and friends. While we are home we are planning to help my mom have a big garage sale (to help make room for lots of baby toys, of course!). The last garage sale we had at my parent's place (a few years ago) went pretty well.
While remembering the last garage sale, I recalled a story that needs to be shared...
So early in the morning, my husband, myself and my brother and his wife were all "manning" the garage sale. My husband was sitting off to one side while the rest of us were sitting behind the money table. As Mexican gentleman came up to pay... he said not a word to any of us "white-folk," just handed my sis-in-law the correct change, and turned to leave. As he passed my husband, he dramatically tipped his cowboy hat and said "gracias senior." Then he left. My husband was a little too shocked to react... As soon as the man was out of earshot, we all cracked up laughing.
It isn't the first time that my husband has been mistaken as Mexican, but never with quite so much style!
Another time we were on a road trip and had stopped at a McDonalds for a quick pit stop. When we got back in the car, he told me that he was washing his hands and two Mexican gentlemen came in and started rattling off to him in Spanish...they didn't give him much time to get a word in. When they finally stopped talking and were waiting for a response, he just stared blankly at them and shrugged his shoulders. Probably not the reaction they were hoping for.
I seriously need to send husband for Spanish lessons or else make him wear a kurta pajama around everywhere we go. The sombrero isn't helping matters in the photo above....

he he! my father in law has learned a little spanish to keep up with all the Spanish-speaking people who come into his store assuming he knows their language :)
ReplyDeleteI am mexican and my husband is indian...we have discovered that location matters...even before I met him, while traveling in Korea...many people thought I was indian...and the opposite was also true for him, while traveling in Mexico, people assumed he was a native! Columbus was not far off when he landed in the Americas...and thought he was in India...
ReplyDeleteKurta Pajama is traditional dress for both Indian and Pakistani Men as they give a very dignified look. So I think let him wear kurta pajama and also teach him spanish :)
